Klarna Enters U.S. Telecom, Revives Super App Ambitions

Hey FinTech fanatic!
Another FinTech has entered the telecom space. This time, it’s Klarna. The Sweden-based company is partnering with Gigs, a Google-backed telecom infrastructure startup, to launch mobile phone plans in the U.S. (not Europe, at least not yet).
This move adds Klarna to the growing list of FinTechs expanding into telecom. It follows Step’s recent launch of Step Mobile in the U.S. with plans starting at $15, Nubank’s NuCel initiative in Brazil, and earlier ventures from Revolut and N26 in Europe.
Klarna’s mobile plan will cost $40 per month and includes unlimited data, calls, and texts. A waitlist is already open, and international rollouts in the UK, Germany, and beyond are expected later this year.
The offering fits into CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski’s broader ambition to transform Klarna into a personalized, AI-powered “super app” that goes beyond traditional finance. It’s not their first push in that direction, since Klarna previously tested expanding its app with features similar to Alipay and WeChat Pay.
This time, Siemiatkowski is emphasizing AI as the differentiator. He envisions Klarna evolving into a “digital financial assistant” for users’ everyday needs.
Now that Klarna is joining the telecom push, one question remains: which FinTech is next?
